Dorsey Partner Evan Everist contributed to a TechCrunch article about OpenAI's failure to provide an opt-out tool by its promised deadline. The opt-out option would allow creators to choose whether their work is included in OpenAI's training data. Evan said that “copyright owners do not have an obligation to go out and preemptively tell others not to infringe their works before that infringement occurs. The basics of copyright law still apply — i.e., don’t take and copy other people’s stuff without permission. This feature may be more about PR and positioning OpenAI as an ethical user of content.”
